The Waimate Seniors gave Harlequins their toughest match of the season before succumbing 22-18 at the final whistle. A good first half with long periods of attack was not rewarded with many points but Waimate went to the break 6-3 ahead. After the break Harlequins came back hard before Waimate awoke from their ‘longer’ halftime break and scored two great length of the field tries to wings Gert Swanepoel and Matt Hayman to keep the match close.
A concerted effort over the final minutes of the match had Waimate hard on attack looking for a third try and to regain the lead, but unfortunately for Waimate the Harlequins defence was able to hold them out.
The backs defensive screen and the whole teams tackling was much improved over their previous match where lots of first up tackles had been missed and going into the next round the forwards will know they can match up with any team, so Waimate should expect to consolidate their position in the top three and be looking to be one of the top two!
Senior B lost to Harlequins 34-7.
