Despite giving Celtic a real hurry up, Waimate lost their opening round matches in Senior and Development grades on Saturday.
Celtic overcame a scare from Waimate and were behind 23-16 away from home at Manchester Park, with 20 minutes to play, but 13 unanswered points saw them avoid a shock loss to run out winners 29-23.
Waimate coach John Clunie was pleasantly surprised by his team’s performance despite them running out of puff late in the piece. “We’re never happy to lose games, but to play like we did was encouraging.”
Celtic coach Nigel Walsh said Waimate would be a team to watch for the rest of the season.
He said it was the experience of the Celtic forwards which was enough to see them secure victory in the last 10 minutes.
Celtic took the victory 28-18
