Unbeaten Pleasant Point remain the surprise joint leaders of the Hamersley Cup senior rugby competition after repelling Waimate 13-3 at home.
Conditions were against open rugby but both sides, to their credit, tried hard.
The decisive moment came after centre John Peeters found a gap and fed No 7 Westgarth, who made 30 metres before No 8 Damian O’Sullivan arrived to score an excellent try.
Brad Tegelaars’ conversion made it 10-0 after he landed an early penalty and then added a second on the stroke of halftime for a comfortable lead.
Waimate played better in the second half but couldn’t string enough passes together to threaten, while Pleasant Point were tenacious in defence.
For the hosts, Westgarth, Peters and prop Mike Tuiloma were the pick.
Waimate’s best were locks Scott Buckingham and Tokoma’ata Fakatava, while veteran N0 8 Blair Morris also impressed.
Waimate dominated this match for the first 60 minutes in the wet conditions before fitness told, and after leading 10 – 0, eventually succumbed in the last quarter going down 22-10.
