Waimate start 2016 Season with win

At Alpine Energy Stadium, Old Boys scored a couple of late tries to make a respectable 42-22 scoreline against Waimate.

Old Boys hung in for most of the first half and scored a converted try just before the break to close the gap to 11-10.

A huge second half by Waimate No.8 Loni Toumohuni saw his side up 42-10 before the Blues rallied.

Toumohuni was hard to stop ball in hand and scored a superb solo effort from 65m, while blindside Eafou Tagia also got involved in everything.

Hooker Cameron Westerby-Cox had a busy game against his old side, while Jared Matthews showed his strength at second five with some strong runs.

Big wing Mosese Aho was really hard to stop but needed to get more into the action.

For Old Boys front rower Pangi Iketau tried to get his side going forward as did captain and blindside Kane Whiteley.

New No.8 Taione Ratu needs to get more involved. He only showed glimpses of his capability over 80 minutes.

Replacement halfback Tait Chisholm had an excellent game after being called upon early and scored an excellent try after being tackled, released the ball and got up again and kept going.
