Waimate saves season with 79th minute try

Waimate lock Don Lolo is tackled Points loose forward Jake Mills. Lolo’s impressive final 20 minutes helped Waimate grab their fourth try and stay alive in the competition.

Waimate have ensured the fight for the semi-final spots of the Hamersley Cup senior rugby competition will go down to the final round robin game.

Playing at Manchester Park the Waimate pack put in a superb final 20 minutes to grab the bonus point try in the 79th minute, to sea the 28-20 win over Pleasant Point..

Substitute front rower Red Taupo went over to the delight of the vocal home town supporters to keep Waimate chances of the last semi-final place alive.

The win tied them with Harlequins in fourth place after the Quins were beaten 39-3 by Celtic, with one game left of the regular season.

Waimate will need to keep their giant killing run alive as they head to Temuka on Saturday to face the second placed Magpies.

Harlequins are also not likely to have it all their own way against Old Boys, but will be favoured to win making Waimate’s a must.
