It will be an enjoyable trip home for the Waimate players and supporters from Fairlie after winning 2/2 at Strathconan Park.
The Seniors pulled off the massive upset of the round beating Mackenzie 34-32 in a tight battle while the Senior B’s also had a battle winning 24 – 17.
At Strathconan Park Irish import Steve Horan proved the unlikely hero for Waimate slotting the sideline conversion after regular kicker Mosese Aho had been substituted.
Few in the Waimate side even knew the halfback could kick but his match winning conversion would also have been cheered loudly at Pleasant Point as it keeps their slim top four chances alive.
It was a big battle between the two country sides with no-one dominating.
For Waimate second five Loni Toumohuni was outstanding, while his midfield partner Aho also impressed.
In the forwards lock Jamie Engelbrecht has made a welcome return to the side after transferring back into the province.
The Rams best were centre Setafano Sauqaqa, who had a great battle with Aho, halfback Thomas Mulligan and lock Andrew Scarlett.
The U16 Boys also improved against TBHS Bobcats going down 17 – 28 after conceding 45 pts in the first round. So a good day for Waimate and the teams will look to cause upsets next week when at home at Manchester Park against Harlequins.
