Waimate draw with Harlequins after sideline conversion unsuccessful

Harlequins blew a 22-7 halftime lead to draw with Waimate 22-all, after number 8 Steve Smith scored in the last minute from a dominant Waimate scrum, with Steve Horan’s sideline conversion just missing.

“We had a fantastic first half, the guys played exactly how we wanted but in the second half we did the exact opposite and went away from our game plan,” Harlequins coach Gareth Burgess said.

Burgess said Waimate really took it to them in the second half.

“Full credit to them they played really well and didn’t let us get past halfway.”

Winger Sireli Buliruarua played well to score a double, while Joseteki Veikune and Leone Nawalu filling in at openside flanker had strong games for Harlies.

Waimate coach Barry Caird said it was a great comeback by his troops.

“The forwards were superb in the second half, they played incredibly well.

“We’ve welcomed some players back and that’s really helped us in the last few weeks.”

Their best was the whole forward pack and Loni Toumohuni at second five.

The B’s lost 8 – 12 on a miserable day for rugby to leave them one point adrift of Halequins in 5th place with one round to play, so will be looking for a second win over Celtic for the season next week and other results to help them out to get them into the semis.
